Miami Sounds with Florenza Campos

The sound of Miami is often reduced to a single, high energy frequency, but for those who live and breathe the city’s music scene, the reality is far more layered. We recently had the chance to catch up with Florenza Campos, a local artist and DJ, to get her perspective on what makes the Miami soundscape so unique. From the nostalgia of her college days to the global hits that still move the room, Florenza offers an insider’s look at the music that defines the 305.

When asked about her favourite place to experience live music as a guest, Florenza points away from the main stages toward a local gem called Lagniappe. For her, this isn't just a venue; it is an experience that prioritizes soul and simplicity.

"It’s an amazing jazz venue where you choose your bottle of wine and pair it with a charcuterie board of your choosing," she explains. For a professional artist, Lagniappe offers a rare chance to enjoy music from afar without the pressure of performance. The daily rotation of jazz musicians creates an atmosphere that feels deeply authentic. Florenza notes that the space reminds her of her time at Berkeley, offering a sense of comfort and nostalgia that makes her feel right at home. It is a reminder that Miami’s heart beats just as strongly in a quiet jazz garden as it does on a crowded dance floor.

For Florenza, the music begins in a space built specifically for her. She walked us through her home studio, a creative sanctuary designed and built by her fiancé. This highly personalized environment is where the technical meets the emotional, equipped with everything a singer songwriter needs to bring a vision to life.

"This is my creative space," she says, gesturing to a setup that includes professional microphones, specialized speakers, and a monitor flanked by a vision board. This board serves as a constant visual anchor for her artistic goals. In a city as vibrant and fast paced as Miami, having a quiet, dedicated laboratory for sound is essential. It is in these private rooms that the "Miami Sound" is meticulously crafted before it ever reaches the public ear.

When it comes to the music that is quintessentially Miami, Florenza is quick to point toward the sounds that defined her upbringing. There is a specific energy that comes with growing up in the city, and certain tracks act as an immediate trigger for that "Miami vibe."

"Anything that is Pitbull, anything 'Mr. 305' in the beginning... it’s like, okay, Miami vibes," she shares. Whether it is the hustle of Pitbull or the bright, celebratory energy of Will Smith’s "Miami," these songs are more than just hits; they are cultural markers. For Florenza, these tracks are often tied to the nostalgia of high school and the collective energy of the city. As a DJ, she recognizes their power to instantly set the tone, noting that you simply cannot get "more Miami" than the classic party anthems that have come to represent the city on a global stage.
